UNESCO in Weimar and Thuringia

The German UNESCO Commission and the UNESCO World Heritage Sites Germany have made this year the "Year of the UNESCO World Heritage - Sustainable Culture and Nature Tourism". This gives occasion to focus upon the 3 Bauhaus sites and the 13 monuments of Classicism in Weimar, which are World Heritage sites.

The theme year UNESCO - but WORLD HERITAGE 2014 refers not only to the culture, the natural monuments are included in the tourist concept.

Thus, alongside the well-known cultural heritage sites of Weimar Classicism and the Bauhaus, guests are invited to visit the interesting and pleasant Wartburg in Eisenach (a World Heritage Site since 1999), the Nationalpark Hainich with the treetop walkway near Bad Langensalza (on the World Heritage List since 2011), UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Vessertal-Thüringer Wald (since 1979) and the Rhön (since 1991).

In 1998 the UNESCO declared the ensemble "Classical Weimar" part of World Cultural Heritage. A total of 11 historic buildings and parks are contained in the World Heritage List including:

• Houses of Goethe and Schiller
• Duchess Anna Amalia Library
• Stadtschloß (large city castle)
• Wittumspalais (small city castle)
• City Church with Herder House
• The Old Grammar School
• Royal crypt with the historical cemetery
• Park on the Ilm with Goethe's garden house and the Roman house
• Belvedere Castle and Orangery with park
• The castles and parks of Tiefurt and Ettersburg
• Already since 1996: the sites of the art school of the Bauhaus (the former art school and the Haus am Horn)
